Join Our Team as a Train Assistant – Ensure Safe and Efficient Train Operations!

1. Locomotive Start-Up & Dispatch

  • Assist with locomotive brake tests as prescribed.
  • Couple locomotives and sign on duty.
  • Dispatch locomotives efficiently.

2. Locomotive Preparation & Equipment Check

  • Identify locomotives requiring preparation.
  • Gather and inspect necessary equipment.
  • Clean the work area and ensure operational readiness.
  • Support locomotive start-up and brake testing.

3. Communication Equipment Readiness

  • Obtain and check radios, handsets, walkie-talkies, and telemeters.
  • Ensure functionality for seamless communication.

4. Pre-Trip Safety & Train Readiness

  • Perform pre-trip locomotive and train inspections.
  • Attach/detach vehicles as per work order.
  • Install telemeters, update vehicle lists, and complete vacuum forms.
  • Conduct brake tests in coordination with the train driver.

5. Efficient Shunting & Siding Operations

  • Follow directives to execute shunting safely.
  • Retrieve and place trucks per work orders.
  • Update vehicle lists and ensure smooth loading/unloading at sidings.

6. Train Movement & Safety Assistance

  • Assist the train driver in ensuring smooth operation.
  • Monitor signals, observe train movements, and reset locomotive trip-outs.
  • Provide protection and support during incidents and emergencies.

7. Compliance & Safety Standards

  • Adhere to safety regulations and operational procedures.
  • Stay motivated and competent through regular training.

8. Incident Reporting & Communication

  • Provide timely and accurate feedback on route deviations or incidents.

9. Administrative Duties & Record-Keeping

  • Maintain and submit train journals for payroll processing.

Qualifications & Requirements

Educational Background

  • Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.

Medical & Physical Requirements

  • Must pass periodic medical exams and safety risk assessments.
  • Minimum height: 1.6 meters.
  • Strong psychomotor ability (Vienna Testing System assessment).
  • Capability to carry heavy objects.

Training & Certification

  • Willingness to complete Train Assistant theoretical and practical training.
  • Commitment to obtaining a Train Assistant certification.
